This December marks the 22nd Annual Gingerbread Wonderland. More than 15,000 visitors attend annually, and marvel at the creativity, skill, and sense of optimism that characterizes this charming exhibit. A plethora of over 200 brilliant edible creations are on display, which have included scenes from Harry Potter, Santa’s Workshop, a grand piano, and even the White House. Enter the contest!
Held on weekends in conjunction with the Gingerbread Wonderland exhibit is the Holiday Craft Show. Look no further for those special, homemade, holiday gifts, the Craft Show offers a variety of unique products made by local crafters. Experience holiday life during the Civil War both on the home front and at a soldiers’ winter encampment. Visit and speak with the soldiers as they prepare for a holiday away from home. Explore the authentically reproduced huts, and watch as the soldiers make a holiday meal over the camp fire. On the home front at the historic Vail House, listen to the family read actual letters from the Union troops to their loved ones. Take a tour through the Vail House to see how a home was prepared for the holidays with simple, yet elegant decorations.
You are invited to attend a Civil War era Officer’s Ball recreated in the 1849 Carriage House with fiddle music, ribbons, and pine. Officers are dressed in their best uniforms and ready to dance. Taste some hot mulled cider and cookies by the outdoor fire.

Join the festivities and celebrate Christmas with the Woods and Foster families, who lived at Fosterfields in the 1920s. Design fresh greens into swags and decorate the buildings in the barnyard. Stop by the Farmhouse, where the Woods family lived, and absorb the sights, smells, and sounds of the season. See what’s baking on the wood stove in the kitchen, and enjoy colorful Christmas decorations throughout the farmhouse. Visit The Willows, the 1854 Gothic Revival home of the Foster family. During the first-floor tour, view the festive holiday decorations and discover how the Foster’s would have celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Day. Help with the farm chores, take a wagon ride, and meet all the farm animals.

Our programs include hands-on activities, pre- and post- trip lessons, and take home follow-up activities. Professional development courses are also available.
